Year 2009 was not a good year for tourism industry globally. However, according to Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, the number of visitors to Malaysia from January to 15 November 2009 has reached 21.5 millions. In other words, there is a 7.6% increment compared to year 2008.

Malaysia has been expecting 19 millions of tourists in year 2009. We have not only accomplished the goal but also exceeded by 2.5 millions of visitors despite the economy crisis.

Nikolay Davydenko from Russia has defeated Fernando Verdasco from Spain at here yesterday to win the 1st Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur tournament. The winner won the final in straight sets with a 6-4, 7-5 results. After winning the Malaysia Open Kuala Lumpur final, Nikolay Davydenko holds a 6-1 head-to-head record over the tournament second seeded Fernando Verdasco.

While attending the 57 anniversary of The Selangor and Federal Territory Restaurant Keepers’ Association, Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said government will held a Malaysia Cuisine Festival by end of year 2009. Tourists from all over the world are given opportunity to taste our local cuisine during the event. Besides, the event also expects the participation of chefs from foreign countries.

Carnival Sales 2009 has started last weekend (4 July), and will be ended by 31 August 2009. The 58 days event is targeted to occupy 30% of the tourist total spend during the sales period.

Minister of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said government will take action to upgrade the existing 4000 home stay in Malaysia in order to attract more foreign tourists. She also added, government does not encourage setup of new home stay for the time being.

The ministry will first emphasis on the hygiene issue. Report shows that there are still room for improvement for the home stay hygiene. Also, Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism proposes to launch Railway Home Stay in Kelantan. Under the program, tourists are given opportunity to spend their holidays at the home stay nearby railway station.
