Kuala Selangor is the favorite habitat for fireflies because along the riverbank of Kuala Selangor, there are a lot of the ‘berembang’ trees. Fireflies like to stick around the branches of the mangrove trees (pokok berembang) as they feed on the nectar from the leaves of the trees.

During day time, they retreat into the tall grasses behind the mangroves and at night, all the fireflies will be glowing on the branches of the trees along the riverbank to attract their mates. All the trees will be lit up with the glowing of the fireflies and give out a spectacular look as like the decorated Christmas tree at home.

In order to get a closer look at the fireflies, you have to take a boat ride along the river. The fare per boat is RM40 (maximum 4 persons). Tickets can be purchased at the information center which located beside the jetty. Mineral water will be given free with every ticket purchased.

During the boat ride, you can only see thee twinkling of the glowing fireflies on the trees along the river bank because the surrounding of the river is pitching dark. The boatmen will also brief you a little about the fireflies.

Besides watching fireflies in Kuala Selangor, you can also taste fresh and delicious seafood here. Along the river at Pasir Penampang, you can find a lot of seafood restaurants and the price is reasonable.

How to get there:
From North-South Highway, you have to exit at Sungai Buloh. After that, follow the Kuala Selangor signboard. Along the journey, you will see oil palm estates on both sides. Go straight on until you come to a t-junction with traffic light. Turn right to Kuala Selangor and now you have reached the Kuala Selangor town. Pay attention to the Kampung Kuantan signboard, you have to make a right turn at another t-junction. Go straight on and the entrance to the fireflies watching area is just situated beside the mosque. There is a large parking area in front and you have to walk 50 meters to reach the ticket counter and platform.
